Overseas Application for Stay Permit (KITAS) for Bali

Travel restrictions brought on by COVID-19 prevented foreigners from applying for stay permits (KITAS) to live in Bali. However, overseas application for stay permits for Bali is once again possible under certain conditions.

In this article, we detail who can apply for KITAS in Bali. We also explain the process and requirements to gain residency status in Bali. In addition to these, we also answer some of the most common questions about stay permits in Bali.

Who Can Apply for Stay Permits for Bali

Foreign nationals can apply for temporary stay permits for Bali if they meet any of the following conditions:

  • Foreigners employed by a company in Indonesia.
  • Foreign investors who hold at least IDR 1 billion worth of shares in a company in Indonesia.
  • Foreigners married to Indonesian nationals residing in Indonesia
  • Dependents of a foreigner with a KITAS
  • Foreign nationals who want to retire in Bali and are at least 55 years old

Note that you may have to meet additional requirements and conditions to apply for a KITAS. For example, dependents can only apply for a dependent KITAS if they are the KITAS holder’s spouse or child under 21 years of age. Application for Stay Permit for Bali

The process to apply for a stay permit or KITAS is as follows:

  1. Choose the KITAS relevant to your needs or current situation:

    Work KITAS
    Investor KITAS
    Spouse KITAS
    Dependent KITAS
    Retirement KITAS

  2. Get approval from the Foreign Manpower Utilization Plan (RPTKA).

    Applicable only to those applying for work KITAS.

  3. Get your telex.

    Currently, the telex visa is electronic. As such, there is no need to physically claim it from an Indonesian embassy.

  4. Enter Indonesia through Jakarta.

    At the time of writing, the only entry point for foreigners is Jakarta International Airport. However, once you are in Indonesia, you can go anywhere within the country including Bali.

How to Get a Recommendation Letter from the BKPM

At the time of writing, the only way to get a recommendation letter is to write a request letter and submit it to the BKPM office in Jakarta. It is also important to note that submission of the recommendation letter for work KITAS must be in person.

Can I change my residency status in Bali?

If you have a visit visa, you can apply for a KITAS. Similarly, foreigners with KITAS can apply for a permanent stay permit (KITAP).

Frequently Asked Questions about Stay Permits in Bali

What is the difference between work KITAS and investor KITAS?

Simply put, a work KITAS is for an employee of a company in Indonesia, while an investor KITAS is for a shareholder of a company in Indonesia. The shareholder must also have at least IDR 1 billion worth of shares to qualify for an investor visa.

In addition to the above, the validity of a work KITAS is one year, while an investor KITAS is valid for two years. Holders of work KITAS must also pay USD 1,200 every year towards the Employee Development Fund of the Ministry of Manpower.

How many work KITAS do I need if I am working for more than one company in Indonesia?

You only need one work KITAS even if you have multiple employers. However, you need a notification (work permit) from each company that employs you.

Can I bring my nanny or elderly parents with me?

Yes, but they cannot apply for the dependent KITAS. If your parents are at least 55 years old they can apply for the retirement KITAS. Your nanny can apply for a work KITAS as a manager or advisor. Another option is to use Emerhub’s employer of record service.

How many work KITAS can a company sponsor?

There is no set number of working visas a company can sponsor. A company can sponsor an unlimited number of KITAS for directors or commissioners. For other positions, the Ministry of Manpower decides on the number based on the company’s needs.

Can I work in Bali as a hairdresser or a photographer?
